Drunk motorcyclist survives tunnel crash with 2.3g/L blood alcohol

A 36-year-old Belgian rider crashed inside a Monaco tunnel on 25 June with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit, receiving a six-month suspended sentence.
A Belgian motorcyclist narrowly avoided a fatal outcome after losing control inside one of Monaco's road tunnels on Thursday 25 June. Officers attending the scene recorded a blood alcohol reading of 2.30g/L, a level close to ethylic coma and roughly five times Monaco's legal limit for riders.
The 36-year-old was subsequently brought before the courts and convicted. He received a six-month custodial sentence, suspended in full. The case serves as a blunt reminder of the particular dangers that alcohol-impaired riding poses inside Monaco's enclosed tunnel network, where emergency response space is limited and speeds are difficult to control.
