Drunk driver jailed after serious Larvotto crash

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

A 42-year-old French repeat offender has been sentenced to six months in prison after causing a serious accident on the Boulevard du Larvotto while drink-driving.

A French national aged 42 was sentenced on Friday 19 June by a Monaco court to six months in prison, three of which are to be served immediately, after causing a serious road accident on the Boulevard du Larvotto the previous morning at 7am.

The incident adds to a string of prior convictions in France for alcohol-related driving offences, which weighed heavily in the court's decision to impose an immediate custodial term rather than a fully suspended sentence.

The Boulevard du Larvotto, one of the Principality's busier coastal roads linking the beach area to the eastern districts, sees significant pedestrian and cyclist activity in the summer months. The sentencing reflects Monaco's firm approach to repeat drink-driving offences, particularly where other road users have been seriously harmed.
