China and Monaco reopen economic dialogue after 13-year gap

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

A Chinese diplomatic delegation has visited Monaco for bilateral economic talks, the first meeting of this format in more than 13 years.

A Chinese diplomatic delegation visited Monaco this week for formal bilateral talks on economic and commercial cooperation, marking the first engagement of this kind in over 13 years. The delegation met with Frédéric Cottalorda, Minister of Finance and the Economy, alongside other institutional representatives and local business figures.

The significance of the visit lies as much in its symbolism as its substance. A gap of more than a decade in structured dialogue at this level is considerable, and the resumption signals a deliberate effort on both sides to re-establish channels that had effectively gone dormant. For Monaco, which has been active in broadening its international economic partnerships, China represents a relationship with considerable scope for development.

No formal agreements were announced following the meetings, but the discussions are understood to have covered areas of bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Further exchanges are expected to follow as both sides look to build on the momentum established by the visit.
