Carrefour Fontvieille hit by power failure on Pentecost weekend

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

An electrical fault brought Monaco's Carrefour hypermarket in Fontvieille to a standstill on Saturday 23 May, with management unable to confirm whether the store would reopen before the end of the day.

Carrefour's Fontvieille hypermarket ground to a halt on Saturday 23 May when an electrical problem struck the store mid-morning, causing disruption across its aisles during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

The timing is particularly awkward for residents. The Pentecost long weekend typically draws higher footfall as families stock up before the public holiday, and Carrefour remains the Principality's only large-format supermarket. With the store's management unable to confirm a reopening time before the close of Saturday, shoppers were left without their usual fallback option for the day.

Those needing provisions in the meantime may wish to head to the smaller Casino or Marché U outlets elsewhere in the Principality, or cross into Cap-d'Ail and Beausoleil where French supermarkets remain open. No update on a full reopening had been issued at the time of publication.
