Cap-d'Ail mayor clears way for Monaco tunnel survey

Ground surveys on the Moyenne Corniche may finally determine whether a long-discussed underpass linking Monaco and Cap-d'Ail is technically feasible.
Xavier Beck, the UDR mayor of Cap-d'Ail, has authorised the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur to carry out ground surveys on his commune, a move announced on the sidelines of the municipal council meeting on 10 September 2026. The surveys will assess whether construction of a trémie, an underground road passage, is viable along the Moyenne Corniche in the direction of Nice.
The project has been a recurring subject of discussion for years, driven by chronic congestion on the coastal routes between Monaco and Cap-d'Ail. Any confirmed feasibility would represent a significant step forward for cross-border traffic flow, with implications for residents and commuters on both sides of the frontier.
No timeline for the survey results has been confirmed, and technical findings will need to satisfy both the Métropole and local authorities before any construction decision can be taken.
