Paris Brunner scored the equaliser for AS Monaco during Saturday afternoon's away fixture at Strasbourg, but the goal has been overshadowed by what followed. The German forward turned to the Strasbourg end and drew his hand across his throat in a gesture widely interpreted as mimicking a throat-cutting, before rejoining his teammates.
By Monday, the Conseil national de l'éthique had formally referred the matter to the Ligue de football professionnel's disciplinary commission. The referral means Brunner now faces a potential suspension, with the LFP's disciplinary body holding the power to hand out bans and fines for conduct deemed to breach the league's ethical standards.
The timing is significant for Monaco. With the Ligue 1 season underway, any suspension handed down could affect squad availability at a point in the calendar when fixtures come quickly. The commission is expected to convene in the coming days.
