British rider Matthew Brennan took the stage-two victory at Manosque on Sunday, 214 km after the Vuelta a España rolled out of Monaco.
Matthew Brennan claimed the second stage of the Vuelta a España on Sunday 23 August, crossing the finish line in Manosque after a 214-kilometre route that began in the Principality. The British rider's win came at the end of a day that had Monaco at its heart, with the start giving the race one of its most glamorous departures of the modern era.
Tadej Pogačar retained the red leader's jersey, keeping his grip on the general classification as the peloton pushed north into Provence. For Monaco, hosting a Grand Tour stage start carries real weight: the Principality's roads, port and skyline provided the backdrop for the race's opening kilometres, drawing cycling fans and media from across Europe to the seafront.
