Barnat: Monaco's first water polo France call-up at 19

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Luca Barnat has become the first player in AS Monaco Natation's history to earn a senior France water polo cap, capping a season that also brought a Nationale 1 title.

At 19, Luca Barnat is already captain of AS Monaco Natation's water polo section and, this season, he added two landmarks that the club had never seen before: a Nationale 1 championship title and a first call-up to the senior French national squad, making him the first water polo player in the Monegasque club's history to reach that level.

Barnat's path to the top was not mapped out from childhood. He came to water polo almost by chance, a detail that makes the pace of his rise all the more striking. Within a few years he had moved through the club's ranks to captain a side that now sits at the summit of French club water polo.

For AS Monaco Natation, based at the Rainier III Nautical Stadium, the double achievement marks a genuine shift in ambition. A national title and a France senior cap in the same season signals that the section is no longer simply a local programme but a credible development pathway for elite players. Residents who follow the club's progress in the pool will want to keep Barnat's name in mind.
