AS Monaco honour Hillsborough victims before Anfield win

AS Monaco paid tribute to Diogo Jota and the 97 Hillsborough victims before beating Liverpool 3-2 in a pre-season friendly at Anfield on Sunday 9 August.
Before kicking off their pre-season friendly at Anfield, AS Monaco sent a delegation to lay wreaths at both the Hillsborough memorial and the tribute to Diogo Jota outside Liverpool's ground on Sunday 9 August.
The gesture came ahead of a match Monaco won 3-2, but the wreath-laying drew as much attention as the result. Jota, the Portuguese forward who spent his career at Liverpool, and the 97 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster were honoured in what the club treated as a formal, considered act of respect rather than a routine pre-match formality.
For Monaco supporters travelling to Merseyside, the visit served as a reminder of football's capacity to hold both competition and commemoration on the same afternoon. The club's next competitive fixtures will be closely watched as Adi Hütter's squad builds momentum ahead of the new Ligue 1 season.
