AS Monaco beaten 2-0 by Sporting CP in Lisbon pre-season

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

AS Monaco suffered a heavy pre-season defeat away to Sporting CP in Lisbon on Saturday, with new head coach Filipe Luis facing clear work ahead.

A week after a comfortable 5-2 win over Saint-Priest in their opening summer friendly, AS Monaco were put firmly in their place by Sporting CP in Lisbon on Saturday 25 July, losing 2-0 in a game they rarely threatened to influence.

The Monégasques struggled to create any meaningful attacking play throughout the match, with Sporting largely in control from first to last. It was a sobering outing for a side that had looked sharp enough seven days earlier against lower-level opposition.

For new head coach Filipe Luis, the result underlines the work still required before the competitive season begins. Pre-season results carry limited weight, but the manner of this defeat - outclassed rather than simply outscored - will give the coaching staff plenty to analyse ahead of their next fixture.
