Appeal court reduces sentence for 190km/h Ferrari crash

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Court of Appeal in Monaco has reduced the prison sentence given to a driver who crashed a Ferrari at 190km/h in the Louis-II tunnel.

On Monday 5 October 2026, the Court of Appeal in Monaco issued its ruling in the case of a driver who crashed a Ferrari inside the Louis-II tunnel in March 2026, after the car veered off course at a speed of 190km/h. Kristina, a 38-year-old mother, will not return to prison, after judges reduced the length of the sentence handed down at first instance.

The case had drawn attention in the Principality because of the location, one of the busiest underground routes linking Fontvieille to the harbour district, and because of the speed involved, far above the tunnel's limit. The original ruling had included a custodial term, but the appeal court's decision means Kristina avoids returning to jail, with the exact terms of the revised sentence not fully detailed.

For residents who use the Louis-II tunnel daily, the case is a reminder of how narrow and fast that stretch of road can become, particularly where it merges with surface traffic near the Grimaldi Forum. Monaco's courts have previously taken a firm line on dangerous driving within the Principality's tunnels, given the limited space for emergency response in the event of a serious collision.
