Around 200 workers assembled outside the Caisses sociales de Monaco from 13:30 on Tuesday, responding to a call from Principality trade unions as talks opened on the future of the Caisse autonome des retraites (CAR), Monaco's independent pension fund.
Union representatives and government officials were engaged in direct discussions inside the building while the crowd gathered in a show of support. The CAR covers a significant portion of the Principality's private-sector workforce, making any structural changes to the system a matter of broad concern for residents and cross-border workers alike.
No outcome from the talks had been announced at the time of publication. The size of Tuesday's turnout reflects the sensitivity of pension reform in Monaco, where the cost of living places particular pressure on retirement provision for those who have built careers in the Principality.
