The Casino de Monte-Carlo is one of the most famous gambling establishments in the world, and a symbol of Monaco itself. Opened in 1863 at the instigation of Prince Charles III, the original structure was progressively transformed under the direction of architect Charles Garnier, who also designed the Palais Garnier in Paris. Garnier added the adjacent opera house in 1879, completing an ensemble of breathtaking Belle Époque grandeur. The main facade faces formal gardens and the Mediterranean beyond, with Place du Casino serving as one of the great theatrical backdrops on the Riviera. Inside, visitors move through a succession of gilded gaming rooms adorned with marble columns, frescoed ceilings and ornate chandeliers. The Salle Garnier opera house sits within the complex, establishing the Casino as both a pleasure palace and a cultural institution. The building's construction was so commercially transformative that Prince Charles III was able to abolish personal taxation in Monaco by 1869. Today the Casino admits visitors daily from 10am for tours of its historic interiors, with the gaming rooms opening from 2pm. Smart dress is required and entry is restricted to those aged 18 and over.
