Monaco Hosts International Hydrographic Organisation Assembly, Establishes New Ocean Mapping Centre

The Principality welcomed delegates for the IHO's fourth general assembly, approving creation of a new GEBCO ocean mapping secretariat in Monaco.

Representatives from the Principality participated in the International Hydrographic Organisation's fourth general assembly, which convened in Monaco from 20-23 April 2026. The gathering brought together maritime navigation experts from around the world to address evolving challenges in ocean mapping and navigation.

Discussions during plenary sessions took place against a backdrop of significant transformation in the maritime sector. Delegates examined how digitalisation of nautical data and the integration of artificial intelligence into marine navigation instruments are reshaping ocean exploration, whilst also addressing international tensions affecting maritime regions globally.

A key outcome of the assembly was the formal approval to establish a dedicated secretariat for GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans) within Monaco. This new facility will be housed at the IHO's existing headquarters on Quai Antoine Ier, strengthening the Principality's role as a global centre for ocean science and maritime expertise.

The decision reinforces Monaco's commitment to marine research and its position as home to numerous international organisations focused on ocean conservation and scientific advancement.
